A 5:30 start for me and I was up in Glencoe watching some rather threatening clouds roll in over the mountains. I met Doug and Jackie at the Glencoe House Hotel for a morning of fly fishing in the hill lochs nearby.

Neither had fished before, so I got Jackie going with a 5 wt and some roll casts and a small bibio, hoping for some smaller fish close in patrolling the drop off while I set Doug, an experienced lure angler up with a spinning set up to the side on similar terrain 20 metres to one side.

The relatively calm drizzly weather looked to be some promising conditions, but the fish seemed to have had their fill on a still warm evening the night before. However, it didn't take long for Doug to shout that his first brown trout was on! Just a wee one, but that was him ready for some fly casting lessons.

We set up with the Maxcatch Sky High 7 wt and a floating Airflo Ridged Sniper and a Kate McLaren, and it didn't take long at all before he was shooting 30 feet of line into the mist. I returned to keep an eye on Jackie and get some overhead casts on the go, when Doug connected with his fly for another first brownie, but this time on the fly. Chuffed to bits, we got a quick photo and it was back to the fishing.

We had a couple more bumps as we continued moving spots along the shoreline I had selected, but the wind was getting up to a brisk 40 km/h, so I switched Jackie to the spinning rod and a wee 5 cm Salmo crankbait, on which she also got her first Glencoe brown trout!

The early meet up seemed to pay off, as by midday the wind was howling, so we headed back to Glencoe house to dry off and warm up before they set off into the hills for their afternoon hike.

On the way home I did a little exploring of a potential salmon river.. to update...

Til next time!
