Final day success for Salmon 2025

I didn't get out as nearly as much as I would like for salmon for myself this year. Mostly due to still working part-time on my now previous life as a marine scientist! But also because the arrangement for Oban Angling Adventures to be fishing on the Lorne beat of the River Awe happened after I was almost fully booked for the last couple of months of the season.
Luckily I didn't have any bookings for the last day of the salmon season though, so 31st October I went out in the pouring rain to see what I could do!
The water level was super high as they were relieving pressure on Loch Awe because of the high recent rainfall, so large flies and sinking lines were the order of the day. I had also taken delivery the day before of a Maxcatch Skytouch Spey, and was very impressed with it reaching the far bank in tough conditions, despite it being an extremely light rod to handle.
It only took 2 casts over a lie I had been eyeing up the previous few visit, which finally had enough water to give a good depth to, and the fight was on for a well coloured cock fish of around 8 lbs. A very welcome end to a fantastic year Salmon fishing on the River Awe!
